Oil Pump

Wholesale & Supply
FOCUSON ENGINE® oil pumps are engineered using heat-treated cast iron or aluminum alloy housings with sintered steel rotors or gears, manufactured in compliance with ISO/TS 16949 standards to ensure consistent oil pressure delivery and long-term durability.
FOCUSON ENGINE® oil pumps ensure efficient engine lubrication by continuously circulating oil to bearings, camshafts, and valvetrain components. Available in gear, rotor, or vane-type configurations depending on engine architecture. Ideal for gasoline and diesel engines in passenger cars, light trucks, and commercial vehicles.

Oil Pump

FOCUSON ENGINE® is a premier B2B supplier of engine oil pumps, providing distributors and OEM clients with components engineered for consistent pressure, optimal flow, and the highest level of reliability to protect the heart of any engine.

The oil pump is the heart of an engine's lubrication system. Typically located inside the oil pan and driven by the crankshaft or camshaft, this mechanical pump is responsible for drawing oil from the pan and forcing it under pressure through a network of passages and galleries. This continuous circulation delivers vital lubrication to all of the engine's moving parts—from the crankshaft bearings to the valvetrain—reducing friction, dissipating heat, and cleaning away contaminants. Without a properly functioning oil pump, an engine would seize and destroy itself in a matter of seconds.

Functions of an Oil Pump

Create Oil Pressure and Flow

Its primary job is to generate the pressure needed to circulate oil throughout the entire engine, overcoming resistance in small passages.

Lubricate Moving Parts

It supplies a constant film of oil to bearings, pistons, camshafts, and valvetrain components to prevent metal-on-metal contact.

Cool Engine Components

The circulating oil absorbs a significant amount of heat from pistons, bearings, and other high-friction areas, helping to maintain stable temperatures.

Clean the Engine

As it circulates, oil picks up contaminants and deposits them in the oil filter, keeping the engine's internal passages clean.

Symptoms of a Failing Oil Pump

Oil pump failure is one of the most severe engine problems. Any symptom should be investigated immediately, and the vehicle should not be driven to prevent catastrophic engine seizure.

1
Low Oil Pressure Warning Light

This is the most direct and urgent warning. It means the pump is not generating enough pressure to safely lubricate the engine.

2
Increased Engine Temperature

Without sufficient oil flow, friction increases and the oil cannot carry away heat, causing the engine to run hotter than normal.

3
Ticking or Tapping Noises

Hydraulic lifters in the valvetrain will begin to make noise when they are starved of oil, often being the first audible sign of low pressure.

4
Whining Noise from the Pump

As the gears or rotors inside a worn pump begin to fail, they can produce a distinct whining sound that rises and falls with engine RPM.

Oil Pump vs. Water Pump

What is a Water Pump?

The water pump is the heart of the engine's cooling system. Driven by an external belt (timing or serpentine), it circulates coolant (a mixture of water and antifreeze) between the engine block, cylinder head, and radiator to dissipate heat and maintain a stable operating temperature.

Attribute Oil Pump Water Pump
Fluid Engine Oil Coolant / Antifreeze
Primary Function Lubrication Cooling
Location Internal (in oil pan) External (on engine front)
Failure Symptom Low oil pressure, engine noise Overheating, coolant leak

The Oil Pump is the engine's circulatory system, moving life-giving blood; the Water Pump is its perspiration system, providing crucial cooling.

Required Tools for Replacement

Socket Set & Extensions
Torque Wrench
Gasket Scraper & Sealant
Oil Pan & Oil Pickup Tube Gaskets

Pro Tips

Always prime a new oil pump by filling it with fresh engine oil or assembly lube before installation to ensure it creates pressure immediately on startup.
Thoroughly clean the oil pickup tube screen. A clogged screen is a common cause of pump failure and will destroy a new pump.
Always replace the O-ring or gasket for the oil pickup tube. A small air leak here will prevent the pump from drawing oil.

Choosing the Right Oil Pump

Exact OEM Match

Use the vehicle's VIN to ensure a perfect match. Drive mechanisms, mounting points, and flow rates are highly specific.

Standard vs. High Volume

Choose a standard volume pump for stock rebuilds. High volume pumps are for performance engines with looser bearing clearances.

Precision Manufacturing

Select a pump with tight internal tolerances between the rotors/gears and housing to ensure it builds pressure efficiently.

Brand Reputation

Given its critical role, choose a trusted brand like FOCUSON ENGINE® known for quality materials and rigorous testing.

Include Gaskets & Seals

Opt for a pump that comes with the necessary mounting gaskets and O-rings to ensure a leak-free installation.

Check for Installation Kits

Some suppliers offer kits that include the pump, oil pickup tube, and drive mechanism (if applicable) for a complete service.

Applications of Oil Pumps

All Internal Combustion Engines

An essential, non-optional component in every four-stroke engine, from passenger cars to heavy-duty trucks.

Wet Sump Systems

The most common design, where a single pump is submerged in the oil pan at the bottom of the engine.

Dry Sump Systems

Used in high-performance racing, these systems use two or more pumps: one to scavenge oil from the pan and another to supply it under pressure.

Automatic Transmissions

A different type of pump is used to circulate automatic transmission fluid (ATF) for hydraulic control and lubrication.
