FAQs

The coolant reservoir stores excess coolant fluid that expands as it heats up. When the engine cools down, the coolant contracts and is drawn back into the radiator from the reservoir. This ensures that the radiator stays full and maintains the correct coolant level to prevent the engine from overheating.

As the engine runs, the coolant circulates through the radiator and engine to absorb heat. As it heats up, the coolant expands and may overflow into the reservoir. When the engine cools down, the coolant contracts, and the reservoir releases coolant back into the radiator to keep it filled to the appropriate level.

The coolant reservoir is typically located near the radiator, often on the side of the engine bay. It is a plastic tank with a cap, usually marked with "Coolant" or "Overflow," and is usually translucent so you can visually check the coolant level.

To check the coolant level: Ensure the engine is cool before opening the cap to avoid burns from hot coolant. Look at the markings on the side of the reservoir, usually labeled with "Low" and "Full" lines. If the level is below the "Low" mark, you may need to add more coolant.

If the coolant reservoir is empty, it could indicate a coolant leak, or it might mean the radiator is low on coolant. Driving with low coolant can cause the engine to overheat and result in damage to the engine components. Always ensure the reservoir is filled to the proper level.

It is not advisable to drive with a low coolant level in the reservoir. Without sufficient coolant, the engine may overheat, which can cause long-term damage. If the coolant is consistently low, there may be an underlying issue, such as a leak in the radiator or hoses.

While it’s possible to top off the coolant with water in an emergency, it’s not a permanent solution. Water does not have the same anti-freeze and anti-corrosion properties as coolant. It's best to use the proper coolant mixture recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer to maintain the cooling system's efficiency and prevent engine damage.

The type of coolant you should use depends on your vehicle’s make and model. Generally, you should use the same type of coolant that is recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Coolants come in various colors and types (like ethylene glycol-based or propylene glycol-based). Some vehicles require specific coolants to avoid chemical reactions with other parts of the cooling system.
